Blue Elephant Racing Start: Kathmandu, Nepal; Foothills of the Himalayas at over 1200 Meters above sea level

In Between: Around 2000 unsupported kilometres of mountains, deserts, dirt tracks, jungles, bad roads, life, limbs, monsoon and cyclones along a route that is to be made up as we go.

Finish: Pondicherry, South India

The Rickshaw Run weaves its way through the Indian subcontinent and will see us risk life and limb, literally, to get our three wheelers across the worst roads and tracks imaginable and through jungles and monsoon rains to complete the journey south.

When we say 'unsupported' we mean exactly that; no help at all from the organisers. We'll be left to our own devices in planning the route, food, accommodation, vehicle repairs and hospital treatment. We have been warned to stay off the highways because of the risk of 'death by truck'. Don’t be too alarmed by this – we’ll be part of a 5 rickshaw convoy consisting of 5 teams and a total of 11 people.

The Rickshaw run will start on the 1st June and we aim to finish by the 16th June '08 depending on the route, weather and disposition of the gods. Keep visiting to track our progress.

Every penny that you donate will go directly towards helping these charities continue their important work. Please dig deep and don't hesitate to visit again ;-)

Day Fifteen: An easy drive to the finish line?

Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry

Pondicherry is 100km south of Mahabalipuram.  A 2.5 hour drive in the rickshaw would see us to the finish line and the rickshaw run would be over.

The drive started well with the five teams cruising along passing other rickshaw runners broken down by the road side or on the back of trucks.  Someone must have jinxed us.  Perhaps we did it ourselves talking about how well it was going.  I had started to get a little sad about the Blue Elephant rickshaw.  Sad to see her go.  Sad that this was to be our last drive together.  This time when she broke down she didn't pull any punches.  We ground to a halt 40km out of Pondicherry.  We changed a spark plug that had been eaten away, checked the fuel and air filter.  We checked that that sparkplug sparked - no joy.  Blue Elephant had died and their was no resusitating her.  My nostalgia turned to a desire to smash the rickshaw and dump it by the roadside - a sentiment that i was now familiar with.

In the end there was nothing else for it.  Blue Elephant was towed across the finish line by Tigger.  The rickshaw run was over and the Blue Elephant Rickshaw was dead on arrival.
